Living in a Former Dairy
The word dairy has an almost nostalgic ring to it today. It conjures up images of milk churns, butter, regional farming, and the distinctive scent that once filled these places – a blend of fresh milk, timber, damp stone, and the rich aroma of maturing cheese. Historically, dairies were far more than production facilities. They were the places where milk from the surrounding farms was collected, processed, and transformed into butter, curd cheese, or regional specialties such as Holsteiner Tilsiter.
In many ways, they were the food hubs of their time: central places of production, exchange, and community – long before Wi-Fi and brand strategies. The fact that a former dairy has now become the heart of a home is therefore a fitting twist of history. A place once dedicated to transforming an everyday raw material into something special has itself been transformed into a place where architecture, design, and carefully selected materials create a new centre of everyday life.

Embert Raumkonzept transformed a historic dairy dating from 1886 and 1920 into a contemporary residence that respects the character of the original buildings while responding consistently to the demands of modern living. Where the former production hall could no longer be preserved, a new structure was created, developed from the inside out. Rather than allowing the exterior form to dictate the design, the architecture began with a simple question: how can light, space, and everyday life work together in the best possible way?
Within this carefully composed setting, KFF furniture integrates effortlessly. The YOUMA CASUAL, featuring both the wire sled base and the swivel four-star base SL, reinforces the openness of the floor plan. Its soft contours and inviting shell reflect the warm materiality of the interior. In the living area, the NEST PURE LOUNGE complements the concept with equal ease. Its industrial-inspired silhouette resonates with the building’s history while creating a secluded retreat overlooking the expansive surrounding landscape.
